Australia and Britain Impose Sanctions on Russia
Australia and the United Kingdom have announced their most extensive sanctions packages against the Russian Federation since the full-scale invasion began four years ago. Australia's measures, its most significant since February 2022, target 180 individuals, entities, and vessels. This includes the first-ever targeted sanctions against vessels in Russia's 'shadow fleet' used to circumvent oil price caps. Australia has also lowered the price cap on Russian oil from $47.60 to $44.10 per barrel and sanctioned cryptocurrency organizations in a move to disrupt funding for Russian military operations. These coordinated actions represent a continued effort by Western allies to constrict Russia's war economy.
Support for Ukraine and New Restrictions
Australia's total assistance to Ukraine now exceeds $1.7 billion, including $40 million directed to an Energy Support Fund. An additional $10 million was allocated in January 2026 to help Ukraine recover from Russian winter attacks on its critical infrastructure.
Concurrently, the United Kingdom has unveiled its largest sanctions package since the start of the invasion, affecting approximately 300 individuals and entities. A primary target is the state-owned pipeline operator 'Transneft,' which handles over 80% of Russia's oil exports. Subsidiaries of the nuclear energy corporation 'Rosatom' have also been sanctioned. The UK's new package further designates 49 individuals and organizations involved in supplying components for Russian drones. Other targets include nine banks, three nuclear energy companies, and six liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, including the 'Portovaya' and 'Vysotsk' terminals.
These actions by both nations underscore their ongoing commitment to imposing economic costs on Russia and supporting Ukraine. By expanding restrictions to pivotal sectors like energy, finance, and technology, the sanctions aim to significantly hinder Russia's ability to finance its war effort. This latest round of coordinated measures highlights sustained Western unity in countering Russian aggression.
