Oshen C-Star PC13 Triumphs in the Microtransat Challenge
The 1.2-meter autonomous sailboat, Oshen C-Star PC13, has made history as the first unmanned vessel to successfully navigate across the Atlantic Ocean, covering over 5,700 kilometers without any human intervention. This innovative project aims to develop affordable floating weather stations capable of collecting oceanic data in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
Launching from Gran Canaria on May 7, the Oshen C-Star PC13 completed its autonomous voyage after 127 days, anchoring off the coast of Barbados. Throughout its journey, the boat skillfully maneuvered through busy shipping lanes, endured Tropical Storm Dolly, and withstood waves reaching nine meters in height.
Technical Highlights and Future Objectives
The sailboat relied solely on wind power and an advanced navigation computer that continuously adjusted for wind speed, ocean currents, and battery levels. Although equipped with a solar-powered auxiliary motor, its use was prohibited during the competition. Earlier attempts included a 2023 trial that ended after 20 days and a 2024 prototype that managed 277 days at sea—covering three-quarters of the Atlantic—before a storm tore its sail.
During this latest crossing, the vessel experienced rudder issues, but its self-correcting systems effectively resolved them. Notably, last year, a similar model operated within the eye wall of Hurricane Humberto near the U.S. Virgin Islands, transmitting valuable data to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Looking ahead, the project envisions deploying a fleet of drones equipped with underwater hydrophones to detect acoustic signals and monitor illegal fishing vessels that disable satellite transponders.
The success of Oshen C-Star PC13 in the Microtransat Challenge marks a significant breakthrough for autonomous maritime technology. Beyond showcasing the capabilities of unmanned vessels, this achievement promises to enhance ocean monitoring systems, improving data collection in remote regions.
