State of the M05 'Kyiv-Odesa' Highway
The M05 'Kyiv-Odesa' highway is now in a critical state, with numerous potholes severely disrupting traffic flow. No major overhaul has been carried out for approximately 20 years, leading to serious road damage. On some sections, potholes reach depths of 30 centimeters, creating significant hazards for drivers. The situation deteriorated sharply about three weeks ago following a period of heavy ice, which caused a spike in vehicle damage, particularly during nighttime hours.
Problems on the Highway
The problematic stretches of the M05 highway are located within the Odesa, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, and Kyiv regions. Potholes are causing vehicles to lose wheels or suffer punctured tires. Drivers report that speeds of 40-50 km/h are the maximum safe limit, as attempting to go faster risks serious damage to their vehicles.
"There are moments when drivers swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid craters because it's impossible to drive over them," said Serhiy, a driver with over 30 years of experience.
Traffic volume on this route exceeds 15,000 vehicles per day, further complicating the situation. Road crews are currently limited to using cold asphalt mix for patching holes. A full-scale repair using hot asphalt is planned to begin after a stable warming trend, tentatively from March, if temperatures rise to +10 degrees Celsius. This vital corridor is a key artery for Ukraine's domestic logistics and agricultural exports.
It is worth noting that the road's condition was worsened by heavy precipitation and sharp temperature fluctuations, from rain to freezing temperatures of minus 10-15 degrees. The road maintenance sector has been chronically underfunded for years due to the war, which has also impacted the highway's state. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko has instructed relevant agencies to ensure readiness for ongoing road repairs, but the situation remains difficult for now.
"The tires are simply being ripped off. Cars are stranded on the road," noted one grain carrier.
The state of the M05 'Kyiv-Odesa' highway is a consequence of the prolonged underfunding of road infrastructure, a problem exacerbated by wartime conditions. The deteriorating road surface could lead to an increase in traffic accidents and negatively impact the regional economy, as this route is crucial for freight transport. Timely major repairs could improve the situation, but their implementation depends on weather conditions and funding. Therefore, it is critical for the responsible authorities to secure the necessary resources to restore this infrastructure.
