Development of the Backfire Drone
Ukrainian military engineers have developed and launched serial production of the Backfire, a reusable strike drone bomber. This project began as a grassroots initiative by enthusiasts in the early months of the full-scale invasion. The drone is capable of successfully destroying Russian rear positions dozens of kilometers from the front line. Serviceman Ilya Shpolyansky of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced this during an interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko. The rapid development of such systems highlights Ukraine's innovative approach to countering a larger adversary.
The Project and Its Implementation
The project commenced in March-April 2022 when a group of engineers began working on creating a strike bomber aircraft.
"At the start of the war, I began working on UAVs. From May, engineers interested in UAVs started gathering, and we began creating a reusable strike bomber aircraft," said Ilya Shpolyansky. The drone was named Backfire, as its lead engineer used the callsign 'Backfire,' which in English means 'a reverse or counter-blast.' The core concept was to enable very cheap bombing of enemy rear areas.
Initially, drone production was carried out in an artisanal manner within individual units.
"For a certain time, we developed this independently. Back when we were still communicating, we machined them ourselves, installed the electronics ourselves, and configured them," stated Ilya Shpolyansky. However, over time, the need arose to transition to systematic work. The technology was handed over to specialists who significantly scaled up the production process. "We transferred the developments to a systemic company that was created specifically for this project," he added.
The Backfire drone possesses significant combat capabilities. It can perform over 50 combat sorties and is also resistant to electronic warfare systems. "Today, this aircraft is the best in its class within the Armed Forces and is destroying the enemy on all fronts. It is very durable and withstands many landings," noted the serviceman. Thus, the Backfire drone has become an important element in the Ukrainian military's fight against the aggression.
The development of drones based on military engineers' initiative demonstrates the speed and adaptability of Ukraine's military-industrial complex under the conditions of modern warfare. The experience gained during the creation of Backfire could form the basis for further innovations in unmanned technology, which is crucial for maintaining the combat capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In the context of active hostilities, such developments can significantly influence the tactical capabilities of Ukrainian troops and their ability to resist the enemy.
The advancements in drone technology are not limited to the Backfire project. Recently, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has been testing new bomber drones, indicating a strategic shift on the front lines. These developments reflect a broader commitment to enhancing Ukraine's aerial capabilities in response to ongoing challenges in the conflict.
