Previewing the Clash with Denmark

Ainars Bagatskis, head coach of the Ukrainian men's national basketball team, addressed local media before the team's away World Cup 2027 qualifying match against Denmark in Farum. Fresh off a recent victory over Georgia, the squad is putting the final touches on its preparations. The coach provided updates on player fitness, an assessment of the opponent, and the principles guiding his roster decisions.

Bagatskis noted that following the Georgia game, the team stuck to a standard routine involving travel, rest, and recovery. He emphasized that physiotherapists worked late into the night, after which the players got good sleep and completed a practice session.

“Based on what I see—their body language and how they interact with each other—everything is fine,” the coach remarked.

The squad faces no major health concerns, though guard Ivan Tkachenko did not finish the match against Georgia due to leg fatigue rather than an injury. Bagatskis explained: 'It wasn't an injury. At the club level, he plays limited minutes, but with the national team, he spends much more time on the court. His legs were just a bit tired, but now everything is okay.'

Game Preparation

Regarding the buildup to the Denmark match, the coach highlighted the opponent's fast-break offense.

“No matter what Denmark does, we have to shut down their transition game. They don't hesitate—whether it's a good decision or not, if they see the rim, they attack. We need to force them to play as much five-on-five, half-court basketball as possible, and not let them score in transition. That should be enough for us to succeed,” Bagatskis stressed.

Currently representing Ukraine on the court are:

  • Daniil Sypalo
  • Mykhailo Bublyk
  • Yehor Sushkin

Bagatskis also reiterated that the national team must always feature the best players, regardless of where they compete. 'I watch plenty of Super League games. Right now, I can name Sypalo, maybe Tymofeienko, maybe Zabirchenko, maybe Koniev. But the principle is simple—the national team should have the strongest players,' the coach stated.

Ukraine has already held its first practice session in Denmark ahead of the game, and all players are focused on a tough battle. 'When players come to the national team, they play with incredible motivation. We saw that in the matches against Lithuania and Georgia. We know what we're fighting for,' Bagatskis concluded.

The Ukrainian team's preparation for the Denmark match is a critical element of their success in World Cup qualifying. Coach Ainars Bagatskis is emphasizing the need to control the opponent's fast-break attack, which could prove decisive. Given their strong recent performances, the team has every chance to extend its winning streak if it can properly execute the coach's tactical game plan.
