Corporate Lending Expansion in Ukraine

Ukrainian banks have significantly scaled up their corporate lending operations in the decade following the 2014-2015 crisis. The number of active corporate borrowers has doubled, now exceeding 17,000 companies—a clear sign of economic recovery and growing trust in financial institutions. For roughly the past year, the annual growth rate of the net hryvnia loan portfolio has topped 30%, reflecting banks' aggressive lending strategies.

This marks the longest period of credit expansion in over fifteen years. Under a state-backed program tied to the Credit Development Strategy, the defense-industrial sector has received more than UAH 9 billion. In May, banks signed a Memorandum on financing the defense-industrial complex, underscoring their active role in supporting critical economic sectors.

Key Areas of Lending Activity

Banks are actively lending to all enterprise groups, with comparable growth rates across their hryvnia portfolios. Companies' outlooks for future capital expenditures remain optimistic. Lending to the processing industry and construction is expanding rapidly, while trade and agriculture are the largest recipients of new loans.

At the same time, banks are channeling significant funds into energy infrastructure, primarily through long-term financing. Older non-performing loans are increasingly less influential on portfolio quality, which is upheld by prudent lending standards and thorough borrower screening. Over 70% of banks' net loans go to companies with satisfactory, strong, or excellent financial health.

This positive trajectory in corporate lending highlights a gradual revival of economic activity after a difficult period. High business confidence in banking institutions, combined with active government support in key sectors like defense and energy, underscores the importance of credit in driving economic growth. Sustaining these trends could significantly bolster the stability and expansion of Ukraine's economy in the years ahead.

As corporate lending continues to grow, it's important to note that businesses in high-risk areas are also experiencing a surge in financing. This trend reflects a broader resilience in Ukraine's economy amid ongoing challenges.
