Yevgeny Isakov Takes the Helm

Yevgeny Isakov has been appointed head coach of the Zaporizhzhia basketball club. He will be joined on the coaching staff by Dmytro Shchiglynskyi, who served as the team’s head coach last season. Isakov brings extensive basketball experience, including stints in Kazakhstan where he coached the teams Astana, Barsy, and Irbis, as well as the national squad. In Ukraine, he previously worked with Hoverla and DiDiBao in the Higher League. Last season, Isakov led the Super League club Kryvbas, which was sitting near the top of the standings when the season was cut short. He has already begun assembling the Zaporizhzhia roster for the 2026/27 campaign.

Alongside the coaching news, the Ukrainian national basketball team’s performance in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers deserves attention. In the fourth round of qualifying, Ukraine suffered a 78:64 loss to Spain. The third round also ended in defeat against Spain, with a heavy 66:86 scoreline. However, in the second round, the Ukrainian squad secured a commanding 88:71 victory over Denmark. The opening qualifier brought a win over Georgia, with Ukraine triumphing 79:92.
