A Father’s Emotional Tribute Marks the Anniversary of His Fallen Son’s Death

Remembering Ostap Onistrat

On the anniversary of Ostap Onistrat’s death, his father Andriy Onistrat shared heartfelt memories and a photo taken at his son’s gravesite. Ostap was killed in 2023 near Vuhledar at just 21 years old. He volunteered to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine in June 2022 and served in the Air Assault Forces (AAF), working as a UAV operator for the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade. For his service, he was posthumously awarded the Order 'For Courage' of the third degree.

A Father’s Recollections

Writing about his son, Andriy Onistrat said:

“Three years. Like a minute. In a month, he would have turned 25…”

He also recalled their conversations: “I talk to him often. About life. He asked me for advice on many things. Endless talks. I always made tea or coffee in the morning. I woke him up a little later.” The father also remembers that Ostap wanted to be a stormtrooper and dreamed of new technology: “I remember when he showed me the future 'Vampire.' Now there are so many different tools… Only desire.”

The location where Ostap Onistrat died is now 45 km from the front line. Andriy Onistrat, a businessman, raises three children together with TV host Valentyna Khamayko: sons Mykhailo and Andriy, and daughter Myroslava. He also has an adult daughter, Viktoriya, who has her own family and a child.

These memories highlight not only the loss but also the enduring legacy of Ostap Onistrat’s heroism and his contribution to Ukraine’s defense.

Andriy Onistrat’s reflections go beyond personal grief, underscoring the importance of remembering young heroes who gave their lives for their country. Ostap Onistrat has become a symbol of courage and bravery, inspiring others amid the war. His story, like those of many other soldiers, emphasizes the need to support and honor the fallen, as their sacrifice for Ukraine will forever remain in people’s hearts.
