The Rising Fame of Bibury Village

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the picturesque Gloucestershire village of Bibury has experienced a surge in visitors, attracting up to 20,000 tourists on weekends. This influx has created significant challenges for locals, including Brian and Jill Skarda, who have called Arlington Row their home for over 14 years. The couple has felt the strain of increasingly intrusive and disruptive tourism firsthand.

The Story Behind Arlington Row

Originally constructed in 1380 as wool storage buildings, Arlington Row was later converted into housing for weavers. In the 1970s, the National Trust restored these centuries-old cottages, turning them into one of England’s most beloved tourist spots. Their charm has even landed them roles in popular films such as "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Stardust," and their iconic image is featured on the inside cover of British passports. However, Brian Skarda notes a marked change in visitor behavior since the pandemic:

"We’ve grown tired of aggressive tourism at Arlington Row — with knocking on doors, peering through windows, and constant invasions of our privacy." – Brian Skarda

As a parish council member and active participant in community groups Bibury One and Bibury United Charities, Brian highlights that the sheer number of tourists sometimes made it nearly impossible for residents to leave their homes or drive along Arlington Row. "Many visitors seem more interested in staging poses for themselves than appreciating the historic site they came to see," he adds.

Residents are advocating for protective measures along the nearby River Coln to preserve local wildlife. Bibury’s reputation as one of England’s most beautiful villages dates back to the 19th century, famously praised by William Morris. Brian expresses hope for a future where tourism is better managed: "We want Bibury to find solutions that allow everyone to enjoy this wonderful place while safeguarding it for future generations."

The rapid growth in tourism poses ongoing concerns for Bibury's community, as they seek a balance between welcoming visitors and maintaining their quality of life. With increasing pressure on local infrastructure and resources, effective tourism management has become a critical priority. Local organizations are now tasked with addressing these challenges to protect both the residents’ well-being and the village’s cultural heritage.
