Current State of the Ukraine-Belarus Border
Belarus has announced plans to open its border to Ukrainians seeking to pick mushrooms and berries. However, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) has urged people to treat these reports with skepticism, highlighting the risk of provocations. It is crucial to note that the border between Ukraine and Belarus remains heavily mined and fortified with extensive engineering defenses.
SBGS spokesperson Andriy Demchenko emphasized that Ukraine maintains no communication with Belarusian border guards and has received no official information from them.
“We have no contact with Belarusian border guards. The SBGS has received nothing from them, not through any other channels either. Moreover, Ukraine will not agree to this because it is a dangerous line, and allowing entry to a country that supports a terrorist state is impossible,” - Andriy Demchenko.
Russian Pressure on Belarus
The regional situation is further complicated by Russia pressuring Belarus to allow its territory to be used in the war against Ukraine. The Kremlin aims to extend the front line toward western Ukrainian regions and divert reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from critical positions in the east.
