The European Union will partially launch the biometric entry system (EES) for Ukrainian citizens from October 12, 2025, but full implementation will only take place from April 12, 2026. This is reported by The Guardian.

What Data Will be Collected from Ukrainians at the EU Border

The new Entry/Exit System (EES) aims to automate border control and reduce the risks of illegal migration. It involves scanning fingerprints and taking photographs to enhance border control.

EES will apply to all travelers from non-EU countries, including Ukraine. Data collected during biometric registration will be stored in a single European database for three years. To avoid chaos at the borders, the system's launch will occur gradually, with a 90-day grace period to resolve technical glitches.

Features of the Biometric Checks System

For airline passengers, checks will be conducted at EU airports upon arrival. Those traveling through the Channel Tunnel or ferries from the UK will undergo biometric checks before boarding. The system may create difficulties due to varying operator requirements: some kiosks will ask for ticket information, while others will require proof of insurance or financial capability.

Key Stages of Implementing Biometric Checks for Entering the EU

Key features of EES implementation:

  • Launch from October 12 in 2025 for buses and freight from the UK.

  • Car checks starting in November 2025.

  • Voluntary registration for Eurostar passengers in the initial phase.

  • Full system launch from April 12, 2026, with a 90-day grace period.

The phased approach is intended to ease adaptation to the new regulations. For Ukrainians who frequently travel to the EU, this will mean an additional step at the border but with the prospect of faster processing due to automation. A similar system is already being tested in Poland, set to fully launch in October 2025.

Previously, we reported that the EU will raise the entry fee for Ukrainians to 20 euros from 2026.
