A Tale of Two Brothers: From Olympic Glory to the Battlefield
A special pre-release screening of the documentary 'Interception Game,' directed by Volodymyr Mula, was held on February 18, 2026, at Kyiv's Blockbuster Mall. The film tells the remarkable parallel story of brothers Mykola and Serhii Mikhailenko, who simultaneously participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics and in combat operations in Ukraine. This project explores the profound connection between elite sport and warfare, illustrating how these two demanding worlds intersect in the lives of its subjects. The film's release highlights the unique and often brutal realities faced by Ukrainian athletes during the ongoing conflict.
Mykola Mikhailenko, a midfielder for Kyiv's Dynamo, competed for Ukraine's Olympic football team in Paris. Meanwhile, his brother Serhii served as the commander of a mobile anti-aircraft unit, tasked with intercepting enemy targets. The narrative is further enriched by commentary from the Olympic team's head coach, Ruslan Rotan.
Filming took place over a year and a half and was a co-production. Crews worked in Ukraine, including near active combat zones, as well as in France. Volodymyr Mula, known for films like 'YUKI' and 'Football Nation,' emphasized the film's authenticity, noting it contains no scripted dialogue; all conversations between soldiers and athletes are genuine and spontaneous.
The production faced significant challenges, including a ban from the International Olympic Committee on using unique footage from the 2024 Olympic locker rooms and venues. The film was initially developed under the working title 'Football in the Trenches.' Having won a State Film Agency competition, 'Interception Game' entered wide release across Ukraine starting February 19, 2026.
It was a completely new experience; I didn't understand what was what. It was both fascinating and difficult at the same time.
Mykola Mikhailenko

Its nationwide release serves not only to celebrate sporting achievement but also to foster a deeper understanding of the complex challenges Ukrainians endure.
