Comments from Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi

According to Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, who commands the Third Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the next six months could mark a decisive shift in the conflict—now in its fourth year. He describes this period as the most critical for Ukraine, stressing that the country must seize the initiative to strengthen its stance ahead of future negotiations with Russia. The interview with Biletskyi took place at an underground command post in the Kharkiv region.

Biletskyi noted that the Russian military is exhausted from prolonged combat.

“A shortage of personnel no longer allows them to advance as they did, for example, a year ago,” he stated.
Analyst John Helin from Finland’s Black Bird group added,
“It seems that within four to five months this year, it is much more likely that the Russians will run out of steam before Ukraine’s problems reach a critical point.”
This assessment underscores the shifting dynamics on the battlefield.

Key Frontline Developments

A major factor in the current frontline situation is the restrictions placed on Russia’s access to Starlink, which Biletskyi says will harm Russian forces. 'Moscow is losing radically in frontline communications due to Starlink limitations,' he emphasized. Ukraine is also ramping up drone usage; Biletskyi’s units are among the first to deploy stealth kamikaze drones and robots equipped with machine guns or grenade launchers.

Currently, Moscow controls nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, and Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to fully capture the Donetsk region. However, Kyiv refuses to withdraw from areas not seized by Russia. Fighting continues inside the strategic city of Kostiantynivka, where Biletskyi’s units hold over a tenth of the entire front line and maintain a flank around Sloviansk.

Biletskyi stressed the need to identify areas where Ukraine can improve its position to 'negotiate with the Russians from a position of strength, not weakness.' He believes 'this will happen this year, and I think we will show how our corps is a clear example of this.' Ukraine plans to replace up to 30% of its infantry with technology by 2027.

Data from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicates that Kyiv continues active operations, seeking to break the war’s positional nature. As Biletskyi noted, the next six months could be decisive in determining the conflict’s future trajectory.

Biletskyi’s remarks highlight the importance of swift operational decisions and strategic changes that could influence the war’s course. Given the depletion of Russian forces, Ukraine has an opportunity to consolidate its position, which may become a key factor in negotiations. As the interview emphasized, focusing on army modernization and the aggressive use of cutting-edge technologies like drones could significantly shift the balance of power on the front line.

As Ukraine navigates these crucial months, its role on the global stage is also evolving. In light of the ongoing conflict, the country has become a significant supplier of arms to both the United States and Europe, further solidifying its international partnerships. This development reflects a broader strategy aimed at enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities while addressing the challenges posed by Russian aggression.
