BYD Surpasses Tesla in Five Ukrainian Regions: Leading Areas for EV Registrations

BYD випереджає Tesla в п'яти областях України: лідерство в реєстрації електромобілів.

Rise of Electric Vehicle Adoption in Ukraine

During the first quarter of 2026, roughly 5,700 electric cars were registered across Ukraine. Chinese automaker BYD emerged as the top choice for new EVs in five leading regions, highlighting the country's growing shift toward electric transportation.

Top 5 Regions by Electric Car Registrations

  • Lviv Oblast: 667 units (91% used)
  • Kyiv City: 656 units (56% used)
  • Kyiv Oblast: 502 units (69% used)
  • Volyn Oblast: 443 units (96% used)
  • Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: 378 units (68% used)

Notably, Volyn Oblast recorded the highest share of pre-owned EVs at 96%. In contrast, the capital saw the largest proportion of new electric cars, making up 44% of registrations.

Among new EVs, the BYD Sea Lion 06 was the most popular model in Lviv and Volyn Oblasts. In Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts, the BYD Leopard 3 took the lead, while the BYD Yuan Up was the top seller in Kyiv City. For used electric cars, the Tesla Model 3 ranked first in Lviv and Kyiv Oblasts, whereas the Tesla Model Y dominated in Kyiv City and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. In Volyn, the Nissan Leaf was the most common pre-owned model.

By the end of 2025, Tesla had claimed the number one spot for EV brand preference in 22 Ukrainian regions, with one in four imported cars being electric that year. However, January 2026 saw a market slowdown after the reinstatement of VAT on electric vehicle imports on January 1. That month, Ukrainians registered over 17,000 used cars—a 22% increase compared to the same period last year.

The growing popularity of EVs in Ukraine, especially BYD models, points to shifting consumer preferences and market adaptation to new conditions. The high proportion of used electric vehicles, particularly in certain regions, suggests economic factors are influencing buyer decisions. Additionally, the return of VAT on EV imports could shape future trends in Ukraine's electric vehicle segment.
