UN: global warming will exceed 1.5°C this decade

Згідно з прогнозами ООН, за десять років температура на планеті може перевищити критичну позначку в 1,5°C.

The world is on the brink of a serious escalation of climate risks, according to preliminary data from UNEP. According to the published UNEP emissions report, the projected rise in global temperatures is occurring faster than expected. This information was published by the Euronews portal, citing 'Glavkom'.

The UNEP report shows that current commitments have only slightly reduced the projected increase in global temperatures.

If countries continue to implement their current policies, a temperature increase of 2.8°C is expected. Fully fulfilling their promises, global temperatures will rise by 2.3-2.5°C.

Path to achieving climate goals

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the progress in fulfilling climate commitments 'insufficient', noting that it still indicates a 'climate collapse'. According to the report, the level of necessary emissions reductions and the short time to achieve them mean that exceeding the level of 1.5°C is possible as soon as the next decade.

Leaders of the six largest greenhouse gas emitters: China, the USA, India, the European Union, Russia, and Indonesia, aim to cut emissions. The European Union is the only one among them that has managed to reduce emissions by 2.1% in 2024.

The UNEP report on emissions and temperature forecasts has caused serious outrage and concern in the global community. Given the rapid pace of climate change and the lack of time to take effective action, countries' governments must act immediately to prevent dangerous temperature increases on the planet.
