Czechia reduces defense budget to 2.1% of GDP: Babis calls NATO targets unrealistic

Чехія знижає витрати на оборону до 2,1% ВВП: Бабіш вважає цілі НАТО недосяжними.

Statement by the Prime Minister of Czechia

Prime Minister of Czechia Andrej Babis stated that there has been no progress in achieving the defense spending goals set by NATO. In his speech, he noted that the government plans to reduce the defense budget to 2.1% of GDP by 2026, which deviates from the previous plan of the center-right cabinet, which foresaw a spending level of 2.35% of GDP. Babis emphasized that the agreement to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP is unrealistic, and according to him, Czechia is not moving towards the basic defense spending target of 3.5% of GDP.

Criticism and the government's position

Andrej Babis also accused the government of Petr Fiala of wastefulness, mentioning the procurement of F-35 planes and Leopard tanks. He believes that 2% of GDP is the maximum for Czechia's defense spending. The Minister of Defense of Czechia Jaromir Zuna supports this position, but there are currently no specific proposals for increasing spending.

Furthermore, Babis expressed the opinion that the war in Ukraine could have ended in April 2022, noting that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia was close to being concluded. He accused Boris Johnson, the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, of sabotaging the conclusion of this agreement.

'Our priority is the health of our citizens, so they live long lives,' Babis said.

The statement by Prime Minister Babis indicates significant discrepancies in approaches to Czechia's defense policy, which could affect its relations with NATO and other allies. The reduction of the defense budget in the context of increasing security threats in Europe, particularly due to the war in Ukraine, raises concerns among experts and politicians. This situation could lead to further debates in the Czech parliament regarding defense financing and the country's foreign policy.
