Slovenia's Medal Hopes Dashed by Unusual Disqualification

At the 2026 World Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, Slovenia's ski flying team suffered a major setback. Their star athlete, reigning individual world champion Domen Prevc, was disqualified in the first round of the team event after one of his skis came loose and slid down the hill. This incident eliminated Slovenia from medal contention in a sport where they were considered strong favorites.

The disqualification occurred when Prevc leaned his skis against an advertising board behind Norwegian jumper Marius Lindvik. Andreas Bauer, the technical delegate for the International Ski Federation (FIS), ruled that Prevc could not make his first-round jump. Officials stated the athlete was at fault for mishandling his equipment. Despite an official protest from the Slovenian team, the appeal was rejected.

Team Event Outcome

In the final round, Domen Prevc showed his class with a jump of 228.5 meters, but it was too late to change the team's fate. The Slovenian team for the event consisted of Timi Zajc, Rok Oblak, and Anže Lanišek. The disqualification left the nation without a medal at the championships.

In other results, Ukrainian jumper Yevhen Marusiak finished the World Championships in 29th place, a significant achievement for Ukraine on the global stage.

Prevc's disqualification was a shocking turn at a championship where Slovenia had high medal expectations. This event underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols and equipment regulations in high-risk winter sports, where a moment of carelessness can have severe competitive consequences.
