Russian Shelling Ignites 2,400 Hectares of Forest in Ukraine’s Chernihiv Border Region

Під час обстрілу Росією в Україні виникли масштабні лісові пожежі, охопивши територію площею 2,400 гектарів у Чернігівській області.

Forest Fires in Ukraine: Chernihiv and Transcarpathia

A massive forest fire has erupted in Chernihiv Oblast, triggered by ongoing shelling and now covering roughly 2,400 hectares. The blaze is burning within a five-kilometer border strip adjacent to Russia, an area foresters cannot access due to severe security risks. The fire is located in the Yelyn and Tykhonyvychi forestry districts, part of the Koriukivka forest management unit.

The fire was sparked by continuous enemy artillery strikes. According to the state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine':

'We are talking about the five-kilometer border zone near the Russian border, which foresters have long been unable to enter because of the security situation.'

This lack of access makes it nearly impossible to monitor the flames or carry out any rapid response efforts to contain them.

The situation remains critical due to the heightened risk of enemy sabotage groups operating in the area and the heavy mining of forested zones.

Preventing the fire from spreading to nearby frontline settlements is a top priority. The enterprise has mobilized all of its new firefighting equipment, but full deployment remains impossible because enemy drones are constantly patrolling the airspace.

Meanwhile, another forest fire has been reported in Transcarpathia near the village of Volovets in Mukachevo district. This blaze, located in the Kilytsia tract, has consumed about 75 hectares. Its causes include:

  • difficult terrain,
  • dry weather conditions,
  • strong wind gusts.

As of the morning of May 6, the situation in Transcarpathia remains under control.

Environmental and Humanitarian Challenges

Together, these incidents highlight the severe environmental crisis gripping Ukraine—one driven not only by natural factors but also by the ongoing military conflict ravaging the country.

These forest fires underscore both the environmental and humanitarian hardships Ukraine faces during wartime. Restricted access to affected areas hampers rescue and containment operations, potentially leading to serious consequences for ecosystems and local communities. Fighting natural disasters amid active hostilities also reveals the urgent need for robust planning and adequate resources to prevent such crises in the future.

The ongoing wildfires in Ukraine are not limited to the Chernihiv region. In a similar incident, a significant fire has engulfed around 75 hectares in the Zakarpattia region, exacerbated by challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain. This situation underscores the broader environmental crisis affecting the country, driven by both natural and man-made factors.
