Two Attempts to Smuggle Gold into Romania Thwarted at Chernivtsi Customs

На Чернівецькій митниці затримано дві спроби контрабанди золота в Румунію.

Gold Smuggling Attempts Foiled at Ukrainian-Romanian Border

Customs officers at the Chernivtsi border have intercepted two separate attempts to illegally transport gold across the Ukrainian-Romanian frontier. The operations resulted in the seizure of gold bars and chains, with administrative charges being filed against those involved. This region is a key transit point in Eastern Europe, making it a frequent target for smuggling operations.

Operation Details

  • The first incident occurred during a customs inspection of a Ukrainian woman crossing on foot into Romania via the 'Porubne-Siret' checkpoint. Officers discovered four cast gold bars with a total weight of 400 grams and a purity of 999.9. The estimated value of the confiscated gold is approximately 2.6 million Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH).

  • A second attempt was recorded on the same day involving another female citizen, who was found with 10 gold chains weighing a total of 36 grams. In both cases, protocols were drawn up under Part 1 of Article 483 of the Customs Code of Ukraine. The precious metals have been seized pending the final resolution of the cases.

In a related development, Chernivtsi law enforcement officials exposed the deputy head of the 'Krasnoilsk' customs post for facilitating the illegal movement of Apple equipment.

These incidents underscore the ongoing challenge of combating smuggling and the need for enhanced customs controls, particularly given the increasing activity of criminal groups seeking to circumvent the law.

The seizure of these precious metals and electronics demonstrates that border authorities continue to effectively detect and counter attempts to move goods illegally across the state border.
