Why children under 12 should not eat mushrooms: the real reason from a mycologist

Досліджуємо, чому гриби можуть бути небезпечними для маленьких дітей: експертна думка міколога.

The consumption of mushrooms by children raises many questions. Scientists explain that the main reason for the limitations on mushroom consumption is not related to age, but to the body's inability to break down chitin. Maria Shevchenko shared this in an interview with 'Glavkom'.

«The Ministry of Health recommends avoiding mushrooms for children under 12, individuals with gastrointestinal diseases, pregnant women, and the elderly. Humans lack the enzyme that breaks down chitin, which can lead to digestion issues. However, chitin is expelled from the body almost unchanged,» - explained the scientist.

Although mushrooms are a valuable source of proteins, vitamins, and trace elements, the Ministry of Health advises against their consumption by children due to the possibility of food poisoning. This is especially important considering the fact that children are more sensitive to toxins due to their lower body mass.

«Children face the risk of mushroom poisoning due to their lower body weight, so even a small dose of toxins can cause serious problems. It is also important to remember possible allergic reactions to proteins found in mushrooms,» - emphasized Maria Shevchenko.

Ukrainian scientist Maria Shevchenko explained that the restrictions on mushroom consumption for children are not related to their age, but to the enzymatic characteristics of the human body. Although mushrooms have great value as a food product, it is important to adhere to the recommendations regarding their consumption, especially in the vulnerable child group.
