Updated Disability Pensions for Chernobyl Responders: New Minimum Amounts Announced

Нові правила виплат пенсій для ліквідаторів аварії на Чорнобилі: оголошено нові мінімальні суми.

Pension Recalculation for Chernobyl Cleanup Workers

A scheduled recalculation of pensions has been carried out in Ukraine for individuals disabled as a result of participating in the cleanup of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The new payments are now linked to the country's average salary from the previous year. Revised minimum pension amounts for each disability group have been established and will take effect on March 1, 2026.

This pension adjustment applies to citizens who helped mitigate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and subsequently suffered a disability. The recalculation mechanism is based on amendments to the law concerning the status and social protection of Chernobyl-affected persons. According to these changes, pensions will be recalculated annually starting March 1, based on Ukraine's average salary (income) from the year preceding the recalculation. For the current year's calculations, the average salary figure for 2025 is set at 20,653.55 UAH.

Minimum Pension Amounts

A percentage link has been established between a responder's disability group and the average salary indicator. From March 1, 2026, the following minimum payment thresholds will be in place:

  • For individuals with a Group I disability (100% of the average salary) - 20,653.55 UAH;
  • For individuals with a Group II disability (80% of the average salary) - 16,522.84 UAH;
  • For individuals with a Group III disability (60% of the average salary) - 12,392.13 UAH.

Furthermore, a special formula with a coefficient of 2.09334 applies to individuals applying for these payments for the first time in 2026. As noted by the Main Department of the Pension Fund in the Zakarpattia region:

"Individuals entitled to calculate their pension based on a salary defined as five times the minimum wage must apply the coefficient 2.09334 in their pension calculation."

This reform is part of ongoing efforts to support those who worked in the aftermath of the 1986 disaster, one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. Thus, the implemented recalculation aims to improve the social protection of Chernobyl accident responders, ensuring they receive adequate pension payments in line with the established norms.

The pension update is significant for enhancing the welfare of the cleanup workers who endured the consequences of the Chernobyl tragedy. The new rules will allow pension payments to adapt to changing economic conditions, ensuring fairer social protection for this category of citizens. Implementing this mechanism also underscores the state's obligation to those who risked their health for public safety. The changes coming into force on March 1, 2026, may represent a crucial step in supporting the responders and their families.

In addition to the updated pension amounts, it's essential for eligible individuals to understand the specific criteria for receiving these benefits.
