Over 10 Days Needed to Cover Dormition Cathedral Roof After Russian Strike

Ремонт даху Успенського собору зайняв більше десяти днів внаслідок російського обстрілу.

Restoration of the Dormition Cathedral Roof

It will take more than ten days to install a temporary protective covering over the ruined roof of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. This update came from Bishop Avraamiy, the abbot of the Holy Dormition Kyiv Pechersk Lavra of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The restoration effort is being personally overseen by top state leadership. Ukraine’s president has ordered an expedited temporary roof repair to prevent rainwater from seeping into the cathedral.

During a nighttime drone attack on June 15, a Russian drone struck directly in the altar area of the monastery’s main church, destroying approximately 80% of the entire roof. Additionally, a Russian missile hit the Stepanivskyi side chapel, sparking a major fire. Emergency crews responded to the scene, extinguishing the blaze and rescuing historic artifacts.

Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed that Russian occupiers used a Geran-2 drone—a Russian-modified version of the Iranian Shahed kamikaze drone—to target the Lavra. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the roof covering work for the Dormition Cathedral would take more than ten days. According to Bishop Avraamiy in a phone conversation, necessary materials for the repairs were delivered on the very day of the announcement.

Significance of Preserving Cultural Heritage

This incident underscores the critical need to protect cultural heritage during wartime, as the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is not only a religious center but also a site of Ukraine’s national heritage. Restoring the roof is a vital step in preserving this historic monument and its artifacts. The swift government response to repair the cathedral also highlights the priority placed on safeguarding cultural treasures in times of conflict.

The recent damage to the Dormition Cathedral highlights the ongoing risks faced by Ukraine's cultural sites amidst the conflict. This incident follows a previous nighttime strike that severely impacted the cathedral, emphasizing the urgent need for protective measures and restoration efforts to preserve this historic landmark for future generations.
