Underwater Therapy for Mental Wounds
Scuba diving has been integrated into a rehabilitation program for injured members of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVS). The initiative, a collaboration between the MVS, civic organizations, and a local dive center, aims to help servicemen cope with psychological trauma sustained during their duties. This innovative approach addresses the often-overlooked mental health needs of veterans returning from conflict.
Participants in the Latest Session
A recent training session in the Kyiv region involved six servicemen. Among them was Ruslan Hubanov, an assistant to the head of the Kyiv Main Directorate of the National Police on veteran policy, who was wounded in 2024 while evacuating civilians. Hubanov is also a paramedic. Another participant was Danylo Zaika, who sustained severe injuries on the Pokrovsk front.
Anna Yaroshenko, head of the dive center, explained that equipment is adapted to meet the physical needs of the participants. Those involved report positive effects from the sessions. Danylo Zaika shared his experience:
"At depth, your thoughts switch off, and the anxiety disappears. I really enjoyed it," said Danylo Zaika.
This form of rehabilitation is designed to improve veterans' mental well-being and aid their overall recovery. The diving program represents a significant step in supporting veterans who have endured traumatic events, offering not just physical activity but also a profound positive impact on their psychological state. Such community-driven efforts are crucial for helping heroes reintegrate into civilian life after the front lines.
