The demographic situation in Ukraine causes serious concern. The country has recorded quite alarming demographic indicators - for every newborn, there are three deaths. This information is provided by analytics on the Opendatabot website, citing data from the Ministry of Justice.

In the first half of 2025, more than 86.7 thousand newborns were registered in the country, while the number of deaths exceeded 249 thousand people.

Long-term trends and regional indicators

Statistics indicate that the demographic situation during the military actions has stabilized, but overall, birth rates have dropped by more than half. The leaders in the number of newborns are Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. However, only seven regions show a slight increase in birth rates.

'In some regions, despite the war, there is even a slight growth in birth rates. Kyiv region leads with +6% per year, Lviv with +5%, and Volyn with +6%.'

Further forecasts and comparison with previous years

It is expected that the demographic situation in the frontline territories has worsened. The largest drop in birth rates has been observed in Donetsk, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions. There are more newborn boys, who make up 51% of the total number of children.

The average percentage ratio between birth and death rates remains critical, reducing the country's population by more than 300 thousand people annually.

Nine years ago, the situation was less critical, with two deaths per child born. Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, and Kharkiv regions are among the leaders in the number of deaths.

According to the Ministry of Justice, there is a dramatic imbalance between the number of births and deaths in Ukraine, which confirms the trend of a shrinking population. The average percentage ratio between birth and death rates is critical, annually decreasing the country's population by more than 300 thousand people.
