Democrats Plan Boycott and Counter-Event

A number of Democratic members of the US Congress plan to boycott an upcoming address to the nation by President Donald Trump at the Capitol. In response, the progressive organizations MoveOn and MeidasTouch have announced a counter-event scheduled for 8:30 PM Washington, D.C. time (3:30 AM Kyiv time) near the Capitol building. This reflects the deep partisan divisions that have characterized American politics in recent years.

Congressman Chris Murphy of Connecticut has stated he will not attend Trump's speech. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries noted that the President should use the address as an opportunity to apologize to Americans for unfulfilled promises. Trump, for his part, is expected to focus on economic issues in his remarks, attributing current economic difficulties to his predecessor, Joe Biden. The administration contends these problems stem from decisions made in 2021-2022.

Lengthy Speech Highlights Political Rift

Trump has indicated his address will be lengthy, noting that his speeches during his first term averaged over 80 minutes. Last year's presidential address exceeded 99 minutes, making it the longest such speech on record.

Chris Murphy emphasized that Trump has 'turned a moment meant to unite the country into a campaign rally for spreading hatred and division.'

The planned boycott and alternative event underscore the profound political polarization within the United States. Such boycotts of major presidential speeches are rare and signal intense opposition. The progressive groups' counter-gathering is poised to serve as a platform for expressing dissent with Trump's policies and his approach to pressing issues like the economy and social justice, highlighting the contentious atmosphere surrounding this presidential address.
