Legislation for a Bible Day
Georgiy Mazurashu, a member of Ukraine's parliament, submitted draft law No. 15045 on February 24, 2026, proposing the establishment of a new national holiday called Bible Day. It is important to note that this holiday would not grant citizens an additional day off from work. This initiative comes amidst ongoing debates about the role of religion in Ukrainian public life.
Mazurashu's Previous Legislative Efforts
This is not Mazurashu's first proposal of this kind. In October 2025, he initiated amendments to the law 'On the National Bank of Ukraine,' suggesting that the phrase 'In God We Trust' be printed on Ukrainian banknotes. That same month, he also registered draft law No. 14121, which sought to create a Day of Thanksgiving, also without an extra day off. A similar proposal for a Thanksgiving Day had been submitted by Mazurashu in August 2023 but was never considered by the legislature.
According to data from the Chesno civic movement, Mazurashu was the leading source of legislative 'spam' among Ukrainian MPs in 2025. Over his five-year term in the Verkhovna Rada, he has been the author or co-author of 887 initiatives, with a passage rate of only 19%. This record highlights his prolific, if not particularly successful, legislative activity, especially on matters related to religion.
The push for a Bible Day and similar measures reflects Georgiy Mazurashu's attempts to influence the religious and cultural landscape of Ukraine. While these holidays would not provide days off, their stated aim is to raise public awareness about religion and its societal role. However, given the high volume of his legislative proposals and their low success rate, the practical impact and priority of such initiatives for Ukrainian society remain subjects of scrutiny.
