Second National Forum on Roma Strategy Implementation
Ukraine recently hosted its Second National Forum on the implementation of the Roma Strategy, a key event where participants examined the challenges and future prospects for the development of the Roma minority. This forum served as a crucial platform for dialogue on the need for systemic reforms and for building trust between the Roma community and state institutions.
The event included state representatives, notably Lyudmyla Shemelynets, First Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity. She emphasized that
"when we discuss implementing the Roma Strategy, we must first talk about trust, which needs to be established both within the national Roma minority and with state institutions."According to her, the priority is not just working for people, but working with them.
Among the attendees was Natalka Cmoc, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, who stressed the importance of protecting national minority rights within the context of Ukraine's European integration ambitions. She noted that
"Ukraine's aspirations for European integration are directly linked to how consistently and systematically the state ensures the rights of national minorities."The participation of international diplomats underscores the broader significance of minority rights as a cornerstone of democratic development.
Key Forum Topics
The forum addressed the need for systemic change in several critical areas:
- Education
- Employment
- Social Protection
- Healthcare
- Access to Administrative Services
These sectors are fundamental to improving the conditions for the Roma minority in Ukraine.
The event highlights Ukraine's increasing focus on the rights of national minorities and the vital importance of cooperation between government bodies and Roma community representatives. As Ukraine's European integration process requires the protection of rights for all population groups, the successful implementation of the Roma Strategy could mark a significant step toward a more inclusive society. The emphasis on systemic reforms across these key areas points to the necessity of a comprehensive approach to better the lives of the Roma minority, which in turn could positively influence the country's social stability.
