Border Guard Service Refutes Claims of Dismissal
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has officially denied reports that its former head, Serhiy Deyneko, was discharged from military service on medical grounds. This denial comes after journalist Vitaliy Hlahola claimed Deyneko had been deemed unfit for duty and that a dismissal order was issued on January 27. The agency states this information is false.
The Current Status of Serhiy Deyneko
Serhiy Deyneko, the former head of the State Border Guard Service, remains an active serviceman. It is important to note that on January 4 of this year, he was appointed as an advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs. However, on January 22, his residence was searched by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office as part of an investigation into illicit benefits related to cigarette smuggling.
Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the Border Guard Service, emphasized that military service and discharge are governed by Ukrainian legislation on military duty and relevant regulations. He reiterated that the information about Deyneko's dismissal is untrue. This case highlights the challenges of navigating official statements amidst wartime rumors and unverified claims. Deyneko's continued role as an advisor suggests he remains involved in state affairs, even as legal proceedings unfold.
