Dynamo Kyiv Voices Discontent with Premier League Officiating
FC Dynamo Kyiv has publicly criticized the standard of refereeing in the Ukrainian Premier League, highlighting the performance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during their 1-0 loss to FC Karpaty Lviv in the 22nd round. The club's official statement, published on its website, accuses the VAR team of unprofessional conduct. Specifically, they contend that after a VAR review, the referee wrongly disallowed a goal by forward Vladyslav Ponomarenko for an alleged foul that the club insists did not occur.
Six Cited Incidents and a Call to the Football Community
The club's press service listed six separate instances of refereeing mistakes in their matches over the current season, suggesting a pattern of questionable decisions in games involving the Kyiv side.
"Ultimately, the disallowed Ponomarenko goal now rests on the conscience of referee Dmytro Panchyshyn and VAR official Oleksiy Derevinsky. The former failed to uphold his initial decision to award the goal, while the latter, responsible for VAR, saw an infringement where none existed, depriving Dynamo's forward and the entire team of a deserved success," the club's statement read.
Dynamo's representatives emphasized that their statement aims to draw the attention of the wider football community to systemic officiating problems they believe undermine fair competition.
"With this statement, we are drawing the football community's attention to the fact that the current commentary from the Dynamo press service is primarily aimed at stopping a series of gross errors in the work of the officiating teams," the club noted.
This public critique underscores ongoing concerns about refereeing standards in Ukrainian football, which can directly impact match outcomes and the league's integrity. The issue of officiating consistency is a common challenge in many leagues, and Dynamo's detailed complaint adds to a high-profile domestic debate. By highlighting specific cases and calling for improved standards, Dynamo Kyiv is pushing for reforms it sees as crucial for ensuring fair play for all Premier League participants, especially as domestic competition intensifies.
The ongoing debate around officiating standards in Ukrainian football is further intensified by recent developments, including a formal investigation initiated by the UAF. This comes in light of a club's demand for a lifetime ban for a referee, highlighting the urgent need for accountability within the officiating ranks.
