UAF Launches Referee Probe After Club Demands Lifetime Ban for Official

According to Главком: The leadership of FC Polissia from Zhytomyr has formally requested the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) to impose a lifetime ban on referee Denys Shurman. The club's president, Hennadiy Butkevych, and its first vice-president, the renowned boxer Oleksandr Usyk, signed the appeal, which was sent to UAF President Andriy Shevchenko and the head of the Referees Committee, Kateryna Monzul.

Root of the Controversy

The complaint stems from officiating errors during the 19th round Premier League match between Polissia and Dynamo Kyiv. The on-field referee was Balakin, with Shurman and Slonchak serving as VAR officials. A critical error cited was the failure to issue a red card to Dynamo defender Bilovar for a rough foul against Polissia's Emerllah. The match concluded with a 2:1 victory for Dynamo, with Ponomarenko scoring both goals.

UAF President Andriy Shevchenko has previously criticized the standard of refereeing in the Premier League. In response to this incident, the UAF has initiated official investigations into several match officials and members of the refereeing committee. Following the game, referees Balakin and Shurman underwent polygraph tests.

FC Polissia's official statement declared: 'These decisions constitute gross errors that had a direct and decisive impact on the match result, depriving FC Polissia of a playing and numerical advantage against a direct competitor. In light of the above, and considering the professional assessment provided by the Head of Refereeing, we request the lifetime suspension of Denys Shurman from refereeing activities.'
