Selecting the Correct Diesel Fuel for Cold Weather Driving
Oleksandr Sirenko, an analyst at the company 'NaftoRynok,' has offered advice to drivers of diesel vehicles on choosing fuel during freezing conditions. He highlighted a frequent driver error: confusing the fuel's pour point with its filterability temperature. Understanding the distinction between these two specifications is crucial for selecting the appropriate diesel in winter. For drivers in regions with harsh winters, this knowledge is key to preventing vehicle failures.
Sirenko noted that during severe frosts, the optimal choice is 'arctic diesel' (DP-A). He explained that every type of fuel sold at gas stations comes with documentation, including a technical passport listing all its specifications. Drivers should pay close attention to the line indicating the diesel's filterability temperature to avoid roadside troubles in cold weather.
Filterability Temperature Standards
The filterability temperature standards for diesel fuel in Ukraine are as follows:
- Summer fuel: temperature must not exceed -5 degrees Celsius;
- Winter fuel: temperature must not exceed -20 degrees Celsius;
- Arctic fuel: temperature must not exceed -30 degrees Celsius.
Adhering to these guidelines will help drivers ensure their vehicles run smoothly even in extreme winter conditions. Using fuel with an incorrect filterability rating can lead to clogged filters and engine failure.
Given the significant drop in air temperature during winter, choosing the right diesel fuel becomes critically important for road safety. An incorrect choice can lead to delays and inconveniences. This is particularly relevant in Ukraine, where winter conditions can be severe, and understanding fuel specifications helps drivers avoid unforeseen breakdowns.
