Tragedy in Dnipro

June 3, 2026 has been declared a day of mourning in Dnipro following a nighttime attack by the Russian Federation. At least 12 people lost their lives, among them two children, and 37 others were wounded. Mayor Borys Filatov signed the official decree. Search and rescue operations are still underway, and as of 2:40 PM local time, explosions were heard again in the city, with a drone striking a residential building.

Among the Dead

One of the victims is Deputy Head of the Fire and Rescue Unit, Major of the State Emergency Service Anton Yarmolenko, who was caught in a second wave of shelling while responding to an emergency call. Mayor Filatov also reported that Russia deliberately used cluster munitions, heightening concerns among residents.

The national flag of Ukraine will be flown at half-mast on the city council building as well as on municipal structures and institutions. All businesses and organizations, regardless of ownership, are encouraged to honor the victims by displaying flags with black ribbons. Broadcasters and entertainment venues are advised to limit airing of entertainment content and to cancel mass events.

“Although the search and rescue operation is still ongoing, mourning has been declared in Dnipro for tomorrow,” said Borys Filatov.

This tragedy in Dnipro underscores the ongoing hostilities and their devastating toll on civilians. The use of cluster weapons has drawn international concern over adherence to humanitarian law. The situation across Ukraine remains tense, with residents in cities under attack facing severe threats to life and safety. The declared day of mourning reflects the collective grief of the community for the deceased and its support for the injured.
