What happens when humans spend a lot of time talking to artificial intelligence? A theoretical study released on August 31 suggests that habitual use of AI may gradually reshape human behavior, making it more "robotic." The authors—researchers from the University of Birmingham and Linnaeus University—call this phenomenon "robotoid humanness." Their argument describes a two-way process: AI systems become more anthropomorphic while people start mirroring the patterns that algorithms reward.

The hypothesis holds that repeated AI interaction could flatten individuality, reduce unpredictability, and make people less likely to offer offbeat responses. Today's AI chatbots can already hold fluid conversations, recall earlier context, and adapt their replies to each user.

They are asking other scientists to run those experiments and measure how much AI conversations might actually change human behavior.
