European Trust in the U.S. Hits Decade Low Following Trump's Greenland Ambitions

Європейці висловлюють зростаючі сумніви щодо Сполучених Штатів через політичні амбіції Трампа, пов'язані з Гренландією.

European Confidence in the U.S. Plummets

European trust in the United States has reached its lowest point in a decade, according to a YouGov poll. The primary catalyst for this sharp decline was former President Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, which provoked widespread disapproval across the continent. This sentiment shift highlights growing European unease with unilateral American foreign policy moves.

Widespread Disapproval of U.S. Actions

Disapproval of U.S. actions now ranges from 62% in France to 84% in Denmark. Notably, in Denmark, the proportion of citizens viewing the U.S. as a reliable ally plummeted from 80% in July 2023 to less than 26% at the time of the survey. Countries where fewer people now consider the U.S. a friendly nation include:

  • Britain
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Spain

Despite this, between 63% and 78% of respondents acknowledge that peace in Europe depends on Washington, and a majority still view the U.S. as economically and militarily stronger.

For the first time in the poll's history, the most popular opinion among Europeans is that achieving strategic autonomy for Europe is more important than maintaining the transatlantic alliance. Between 41% and 55% of those surveyed believe European autonomy outweighs close ties with the U.S. Interestingly, many EU residents agree with Trump's criticisms that Europe is overly dependent on the U.S. for defense, has allowed excessive migration, and acts indecisively on the global stage.

In response to the escalating diplomatic tension, representatives from the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland have resumed negotiations to resolve the crisis. Donald Trump stated he has 'developed a framework plan that will meet his requirements regarding Greenland.' These talks could represent a critical step in mending the fractured relationship.

The collapse of trust signals a deepening European skepticism toward American foreign policy, which may have long-term consequences for transatlantic relations. The ongoing negotiations over Greenland will serve as a key test for whether this crucial strategic partnership can be repaired, potentially reshaping future political and economic ties.
