2026 NBA Draft Overview

Only 71 players have submitted their names for the 2026 NBA Draft, marking the lowest number of applicants since 2003. To put this in perspective, 106 players applied in 2025, and a staggering 363 did so in 2021. Basketball analyst Jonathan Givony commented,

“most college basketball stars are choosing to stay in school”
, highlighting a clear shift in player decisions at the collegiate level.

Ukraine’s National Team Performance

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian national basketball team continues its journey in the qualification rounds for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. In the fourth round, the team fell to Spain with a final score of 78:64. The quarter-by-quarter breakdown of that game is as follows:

  • 1st quarter: 16:9
  • 2nd quarter: 12:12
  • 3rd quarter: 24:22
  • 4th quarter: 26:21

Ukraine also suffered a defeat against Spain in the third round of qualification, this time with a score of 86:66.

However, the Ukrainian team showed strong form in earlier matches. In the second round, they secured a victory over Denmark, winning 88:71. In their first qualification game, Ukraine beat Georgia with a score of 92:79. The quarter-by-quarter scores for the Georgia-Ukraine match were:

  • 1st quarter: 23:15
  • 2nd quarter: 25:28
  • 3rd quarter: 13:23
  • 4th quarter: 18:26

Notably, in the game against Georgia, Oleksandr Kovliar scored 31 points over 37 minutes on the court, while Oleksandr Lypovyi added 13 points. Viacheslav Bobrov also made a significant contribution to the win, recording a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

In summary, the current NBA Draft numbers point to evolving trends among college players, who may be opting to stay in school to refine their skills. This could ultimately impact the quality and competitiveness of professional basketball. Despite tough losses to Spain, Ukraine’s national team continues to show promising play, signaling a growing potential for Ukrainian basketball on the international stage.

As the NBA Draft experiences a significant decline in applicants, it's worth noting the broader context of the league's popularity. Recent reports indicate that NBA viewership has reached a 24-year high, highlighting a growing interest in professional basketball despite the challenges faced by college players. This contrast raises questions about the future dynamics of the sport and player development.
