A Novel Danger Detection Approach for Drones

Researchers from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research have introduced a new method that enables drones to detect when they are nearing a shutdown and adapt to loss-of-control situations. Inspired by the natural concept of critical slowing down, the technique relies on onboard sensor data to keep drones safe even after sustaining damage.
The effectiveness of this approach was validated through experiments conducted at the CyberZoo drone research facility on the Delft University of Technology campus. The team deliberately pushed drones to the edge of control loss by damaging them, then analyzed flight data alongside computer simulations. This allowed them to understand how drones can respond in critical scenarios.
