For the second time in a week, drones strike an oil refinery in Kapotnya, just outside Moscow.

Дронові атаки на нафтопереробний завод у Капотні тривають, загрожуючи безпеці промисловості під Москвою.

Strikes on the Kapotnya Oil Refinery

Ukrainian drones have hit the oil refinery in Kapotnya for the second time in seven days, triggering a massive blaze at the facility. Located only 15 kilometers from the Kremlin, the Moscow Refinery—owned by Gazprom Neft—processes roughly 11 million tons of crude annually and supplies about 40% of the capital’s fuel market, including gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel.

According to OSINT channels, at least five separate ignition points were recorded on the refinery grounds, with reports of two burning storage tanks. The previous attack on the plant occurred on June 16. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 555 drones, 180 of which were allegedly shot down while approaching Moscow.

Attack on an Oil Depot in the Rostov Region

On the night of June 18, 2026, Ukrainian drones also struck a target in the Rostov region, igniting an oil depot in the city of Gukovo. Witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions there.

“The attack is ongoing,” stated Sergei Sobyanin.
Notably, the distance from the front line to the Moscow refinery exceeds 500 kilometers.

These strikes highlight the growing capacity of Ukrainian forces to conduct operations deep inside Russian territory, potentially shifting the strategic dynamics in the region. Targeting critical infrastructure like oil refineries could undermine the aggressor nation’s energy security and fuel public anxiety. It may also stir domestic political pressure in Russia, especially amid rising public criticism over safety and economic management.

The recent attacks on oil infrastructure are not isolated incidents. Just a few days prior, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil depot in Armavir, resulting in significant damage and raising alarms about the effectiveness of Russia's air defenses. These events underline the escalating tensions and the strategic implications of such strikes on Russian energy resources. For more details on the Armavir incident, you can read about it here.
