The Clooneys' Upcoming Venture
Hollywood star George Clooney and his wife Amal are preparing to launch an upscale restaurant next spring just outside their residence in the village of Cotignac, located in the picturesque Provence region. This small community of around 2,000 inhabitants is renowned for its rosé wines and is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and almond orchards. Cotignac has also attracted famous artists in the past, with legendary musicians like David Bowie and Pink Floyd recording albums at the renowned Miraval studio nearby.
Despite the excitement, some locals are concerned about the potential impact the new establishment could have on the village's character. Ginie Kronk, owner of the Maison Mirabeau winery, expressed her worries:
“It’s clear that once the restaurant opens, people will come hoping to catch a glimpse of George. We just hope everyone respects the village’s spirit and helps maintain our community’s essence. Cotignac is a former fishing village—not a bustling hotspot like Saint-Tropez. We don’t have grand Chanel villas or throngs of tourists.” – Ginie Kronk
Community Response: Support and Concerns
The mayor of Cotignac, Jean-Pierre Veran, has voiced his support for the Clooneys’ project, believing it will benefit the local community. “I have discussed the plans with the Clooneys and see no reason to oppose them, as I think this venture could be advantageous for the whole village,” he commented.
The site’s previous tenant operated a casual eatery offering wood-fired pizza and affordable meat dishes. The new restaurant is set to feature a terrace and a private dining area, intended to host exclusive events, including celebrity gatherings.
While Cotignac retains much of its authentic charm as a once humble fishing village, the arrival of high-profile personalities continues to stir mixed feelings among residents. Individuals like Lili Jane and Josse Gid have voiced differing opinions about the restaurant, often drawing comparisons to Saint-Tropez but expressing concerns about preserving the village’s cultural identity.
The Clooneys’ restaurant could mark a significant boost for tourism infrastructure in the region and provide a positive economic stimulus. However, as interest in Cotignac grows, locals are mindful of how such developments might alter their traditional way of life. Striking a balance between economic growth and safeguarding the village’s heritage will be essential moving forward.
