How Digital Media Use Affects Children’s Academic Development
Digital devices are now an everyday part of family life, which makes understanding their long-term impact a pressing concern. A study by researchers at Inserm and the National University of Singapore followed 502 children from infancy into middle school, collecting parents’ reports of screen time at six separate stages of childhood.
The findings show that more screen time at around age 1 was most strongly tied to later academic struggles, with no statistically meaningful association at ages 2 and 3. However, the pattern reappeared around age 6. Overall, children who spent more time in front of screens throughout childhood tended to perform worse academically at age 9 and had weaker working memory by age 10.5.
What Parents Can Consider
According to the researchers, several factors can shape how screens affect child development, including the type of content, the device used, and whether parents view screens alongside their children. They suggest that restricting screen time may be especially important during early childhood and the period just before starting school. More research is still needed to better understand these effects, and the findings could eventually inform practical recommendations for parenting and teaching in the digital age.
