Kyiv Residents Face Potential Doubling of Heating Bills, Expert Warns

Експерти попереджають про ризик різкого зростання витрат на опалення для мешканців столиці.

Forecast for a Sharp Rise in Kyiv's Heating Costs

During a live broadcast on his YouTube channel 'Oleg Popenko PRO', energy expert Oleg Popenko warned that Kyiv residents could see their heating bills skyrocket. He stated that if tariffs are raised to match market levels, the cost of heating could increase dramatically. For context, Ukraine has historically subsidized utility costs, but pressure to align with European market prices is growing. Currently, the heating tariff in Kyiv is approximately 1,654 hryvnias per gigacalorie, translating to a cost of 40-50 hryvnias per square meter.

Financial Strain on Capital City Households

For a standard 60-square-meter apartment, Kyiv residents currently pay between 2,500 and 3,000 hryvnias in the winter. However, Popenko forecasts that tariffs could double, posing a severe new financial challenge. He warned that in such a scenario, the heating bill for a 60-square-meter apartment could reach 6,000 hryvnias, a burden he believes would be unaffordable for many.

'He will go crazy, he will never in his life pay for that. The debts will simply be astronomical.' - Oleg Popenko

Popenko also referenced a case from January 2020 in the Kherson region, where the payment rate for utility services plummeted to 46% following price adjustments. This example illustrates the potential consequences of sharp heating tariff increases and their impact on citizens' financial stability.

A significant hike in heating costs could severely affect the socio-economic situation in the capital. A steep rise in utility expenses may lead to a surge in household debt. If Popenko's predictions materialize, not only individual families but entire districts could find themselves in dire financial straits, likely necessitating additional government support measures for the population.
