Ecuador's Top Export in 2025: Shrimp Surpasses Oil, Generating $8.4 Billion

У 2025 році експорт креветок з Еквадору досягне нових висот, випередивши нафту та забезпечивши економіку країни $8.4 мільярда.

Ecuador's Shrimp Export Industry

In 2025, Ecuador's shrimp exports generated a record $8.4 billion, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. This surge allowed shrimp to overtake oil, which had long been the nation's primary export commodity. For the same period, oil exports brought in $7.18 billion. This shift highlights a significant diversification in the country's export economy away from traditional commodities.

China is the leading buyer of Ecuadorian shrimp, accounting for approximately 48% of all shipments. Other major export markets include:

  • The United States
  • The European Union
  • Japan

Industry representatives are optimistic about future growth, stating plans to maintain current performance and achieve an additional 5% increase in 2026.

José Antonio Camposano, an industry representative, commented on the situation, noting: 'It was a minor effect, as it only impacted the United States.'

Consequently, shrimp exports demonstrate robust and sustained growth, confirming their critical importance to the Ecuadorian economy.

The rise in shrimp exports reflects positive trends within Ecuador's agribusiness sector, which could have significant implications for the nation's economic stability. With shrimp now leading the country's exports, this is likely to attract new investment into production and improve conditions for local producers. It is also notable that the primary markets remain countries with high demand for seafood, ensuring stable demand and opportunities for the industry's continued expansion.
