Czech Republic Extradites Ukrainian MP Shkavritko, Facing 12 Years for Embezzling School Funds

Чеська Республіка видала українського депутата Шкавритка, якого чекає 12-річний термін за розкрадання коштів на школи.

MP Dmytro Shkavritko Extradited

Dmytro Shkavritko, a member of Ukraine's 'European Solidarity' party, has been extradited from the Czech Republic to face charges. He is accused of misappropriating funds from educational institutions. The Tysmenytsia District Court has ordered him to be held in custody, and the indictment in his case has already been submitted to the court. This extradition highlights international cooperation in pursuing corruption cases.

Charges and Potential Sentence

According to investigators, Shkavritko worked as an accountant for three educational establishments from 2012 to 2023. Law enforcement states the total damages caused exceed 2.6 million hryvnias. Investigators also documented evidence of money laundering involving more than 702,000 hryvnias.

The court had previously notified Shkavritko of the suspicion in absentia while he was in the Czech Republic. The articles under which the proceedings are being conducted carry a potential penalty of up to 12 years in prison.

'The total amount of damages exceeds 2.6 million hryvnias. Furthermore, investigators have documented the laundering of part of the illegally obtained funds. Knowing the criminal origin of the money, the accused conducted financial transactions with over 702,000 hryvnias,' the police of the Ivano-Frankivsk region reported.

Shkavritko's case will now proceed to trial, where he faces serious punishment for fraud, embezzlement, misappropriation of property, and illegal actions with documents, payment cards, and other means of accessing bank accounts.

Shkavritko's extradition and the charges against him reflect the efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat corruption, particularly in the budgetary sphere. This case could have significant consequences for the political reputation of the 'European Solidarity' party and spark discussions about transparency in the funding of Ukraine's educational institutions. The further development of the case is likely to attract public and media attention, as it concerns not only the personal responsibility of an MP but also the broader system of oversight for the use of public funds in education.
