Vertical Aerospace and Near Earth Autonomy Join Forces
On July 19 at 6:02 PM, Vertical Aerospace announced a partnership with Near Earth Autonomy aimed at equipping the Valo aircraft with autonomous flight capabilities. The core objective of this collaboration is to integrate self-flying technology into the Valo, unlocking new opportunities for both defense and commercial aviation sectors. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that will combine Near Earth's software with Honeywell Aerospace's Anthem digital cockpit system.
Near Earth Autonomy brings over a decade of expertise in autonomous aviation, having developed flight systems for the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and Honeywell Aerospace. Their technology has supported operations of optionally piloted UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and autonomous flight demonstrations aboard Leonardo's AW139 helicopter.
Valo Technology and Testing Milestones
The Valo aircraft, developed by Vertical Aerospace, is currently being designed in a hybrid-electric version that has already achieved a range of approximately 1,000 miles. Additionally, the Valo can carry a payload of up to 1,126 kg on shorter missions. Vertical Aerospace CEO Stuart Simpson stated that
“Valo was designed as a platform from day one.”He further emphasized that
“combining a hybrid-electric engine, extended autonomy, and our patented battery technology allows us to serve commercial operators, governments, and defense customers using a single aircraft architecture.”
In the spring of 2026, Vertical Aerospace successfully tested the Valo eVTOL aircraft. During the trial, overseen by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, chief pilot Simon Davis executed a continuous maneuver involving a transition between flight modes. This test marked the world's first bidirectional transition, validating the Valo's readiness for advancing aviation technologies.
The partnership between Vertical Aerospace and Near Earth Autonomy highlights the growing interest in autonomous aviation technology, which could significantly transform transportation approaches in both commercial and defense contexts.
