New EU sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet
The European Union is considering new sanctions against Russia's 'shadow fleet' aimed at limiting Moscow's revenues used to finance the war against Ukraine. EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels on Thursday to discuss possible steps regarding this issue. The new measures may become part of the anniversary, 20th package of EU sanctions.
Proposals from member states
Member states are proposing various approaches to the new sanctions. In particular, Poland advocates for:
- implementing new rules;
- coordinating actions among member states.
Meanwhile, Denmark has suggested creating a 'more effective' blacklist of the shadow fleet, which will allow for easier identification of vessels belonging to this segment.
It is important to note that every sixth tanker in the world belongs to Russia's 'shadow fleet', accounting for about 17% of the global market. This underscores the significance of these new measures to reduce funding for aggression.
“We will discuss what more we can do regarding the 'shadow fleet', as it truly impacts Russia's revenues for financing this war” - a participant at the meeting.
Thus, the discussion of new sanctions demonstrates the determination of EU countries to combat the financing of Russian aggression and their readiness to take additional measures to support Ukraine. The introduction of new sanctions could significantly affect Russia's capabilities to finance its military actions, which is an important element in the global strategy of supporting Ukrainian independence and territorial integrity.
