Estonia criticized Russia's proposal for a ceasefire on May 9: what Zelensky says

Естонія висловила незадоволення щодо ініціативи Росії про припинення вогню 9 травня: думка Зеленського.

Criticism of Russia's Proposal for a Silence Regime

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna criticized Russia's proposal for a silence regime on May 8-9. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced this regime, but Moscow also threatened a massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv if the parade in Moscow, scheduled for May 9, is disrupted. This situation caused concern among the international community regarding Russia's true intentions.

Margus Tsahkna noted on social media X that 'now is the time for Russia to demonstrate that it takes peace seriously, not just symbolic celebrations.' He also emphasized that Russian troops recently carried out a massive attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and used double-strike tactics against emergency services workers. In Poltava region, rescuers died as a result of the occupiers' actions.

Comment from the President of Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also commented on the situation, pointing to the 'absolute cynicism' on the part of Russia. He stated:

'To ask for silence to hold propaganda celebrations and to carry out such missile-drone strikes on all days before that — is cynical.' – Volodymyr Zelensky

Zelensky emphasized that 'every day Russia can ceasefire, and that will stop the war and our responses.' He stressed that 'peace is needed, and real steps are required for this,' noting that Ukraine will act reciprocally in response to Russia's actions.

This situation underscores the complexity of diplomatic efforts in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the international community's attempts to find paths to peace. The proposal for a silence regime, accompanied by threats, indicates a continuation of the escalation of the conflict. The expressions of criticism from international leaders such as Margus Tsahkna and Volodymyr Zelensky demonstrate determination in supporting Ukraine and a call for real actions to achieve peace.

This situation highlights the importance of understanding diplomatic initiatives taking place against the backdrop of military actions. For example, the recent announcement by President Zelensky about the ceasefire reflects Ukraine's attempts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict despite Russia's aggressive actions. It once again emphasizes the need for real steps to achieve peace.
