Amendments to Estonia's 2026 State Budget
The Estonian government has approved modifications to its 2026 state budget, setting aside €17 million for border infrastructure improvements along the frontier with Russia. These funds will be used to construct engineering structures, upgrade surveillance systems, and integrate artificial intelligence technologies. Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi and Interior Minister Igor Taro confirmed that the border project is scheduled for completion by 2027.
Additional Funding and Strategic Plans
The supplementary budget includes the following provisions:
- Deployment of AI-driven systems to detect border violations;
- Finalization of engineering fortifications;
- Modernization of technical equipment for border guards;
- Strengthened control along the European Union's eastern frontier.
Estonia is also bolstering defenses near the Russian border by constructing concrete bunkers and anti-tank ditches as part of the Baltic Defense Line initiative.
Estonian authorities anticipate a €15 million improvement in the budget balance through cuts in other expenditures. As Igor Taro stated,
