New Leadership for Ukraine's Premier Franko Theater

In April 2024, Yevhen Nyshchuk was officially confirmed as the General Director of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater. A People's Artist of Ukraine who has long been a member of the Franko Theater's company, Nyshchuk, originally from Ivano-Frankivsk, now holds the institution's top administrative role alongside his artistic leadership. The Franko Theater is one of Ukraine's most prestigious and historic cultural institutions.

Memories of a Fateful Audition

Reflecting on his entry into Kyiv's Karpenko-Karyi Theater Institute, Nyshchuk recalls the immense difficulty he faced simply finding the building.

"The entrance was so hidden that I wandered in circles for hours," he says.
His acceptance hinged on the intervention of a compassionate lecturer who, according to the artist,
"took pity on me and pleaded my case to the masters."
He also recounts a pivotal moment when an institute caretaker, noting his appearance, urged the panel: "A young man with such eyes has arrived; turn back and you won't regret it."

Yevhen Nyshchuk is not only an accomplished actor but also a serviceman in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2022, he fought in the defense of the Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions. Furthermore, he was appointed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the head of the committee for Ukraine's Taras Shevchenko National Prize.

His early memories of Kyiv left a profound impression.

"I was walking downhill when the rain began, droplets falling on the chestnut trees. It was May. In that moment, I felt Kyiv, its energy, very clearly,"
he shares. These experiences became formative steps leading to his current prominent position in Ukrainian theater.

Nyshchuk's appointment marks a significant moment for Ukrainian culture, combining his extensive theatrical expertise with a strong civic stance. His military service during the ongoing war underscores a deep patriotism and commitment to his country. In the face of contemporary challenges, the theater requires leaders with clear vision to sustain and advance Ukrainian arts. Nyshchuk is positioned to drive the theater toward new achievements and promote its culture on the international stage.
