Media Briefing Held Ahead of Eurovision 2026

Organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest held a media briefing in preparation for the first semi-final of Eurovision 2026, where they addressed questions from journalists. The main topics of discussion included:

  • the return to the previous system for revealing finalists
  • voting procedures
  • Israel's participation
  • contest preparations and stage design concepts

Last year, the organizers switched from the traditional method of announcing finalists to a new system involving groups of three. Under that format, three contestants were shown on screen at a time, and only one would advance. This process continued until all 10 finalists were determined. When asked about the change, Eurovision Director Martin Green redirected the question to Executive Producer Michael Keon.

“We decided to go back to the previous system because it creates more tension for the audience. We believe it is simply better than the one we used before, which is why we made this choice.”

During the briefing, other issues were raised, including voting procedures, Israel's role in the contest, ongoing preparations, and stage design concepts. A curious slip of the tongue occurred when Martin Green accidentally confused the word “voting” with “dating.”

Preparations for the Semi-Final

The first semi-final is scheduled for 22:00 on May 12, 2026, featuring performances from 15 countries. Organizers are actively working to ensure the event runs smoothly.

This adjustment to the finalist announcement format reflects the organizers' goal of making the competition more suspenseful and engaging for viewers. Reverting to the traditional approach is expected to heighten the emotional intensity during the results reveal, a key factor in maintaining audience interest. Israel's continued involvement, as one of the contest's key participating nations, also underscores the international scope of Eurovision and its role in fostering cross-cultural exchange.

As the excitement builds for Eurovision 2026, it's essential to note the challenges faced by participants, particularly Israel, which recently received a warning regarding its voting practices. This situation highlights ongoing scrutiny within the competition, adding another layer of complexity to the upcoming semi-final.
