EU Nations Secure Funding for Military Modernization
The European Commission has given preliminary approval for eight EU member states to receive funding under the SAFE program for rearmament and military upgrades. This move is part of a broader European push to bolster collective defense capabilities in response to regional security challenges. The countries set to receive funding are:
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Denmark
- Spain
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Portugal
- Romania
The total allocation amounts to approximately €38 billion. Specific allocations include €1.18 billion for Cyprus and €16.68 billion for Romania. Initial payments are scheduled to begin in March 2026. The final decision on the funding must be formally adopted by the Council of the European Union within the next four weeks.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: 'Last year, the EU made more progress on defense than in the previous decades.'
This approval marks a significant step in strengthening the defense readiness of EU nations amid growing geopolitical tensions. The SAFE program funding is expected to substantially impact the modernization of armed forces and enhance regional security by enabling countries to upgrade military equipment and infrastructure. Subsequent actions by the EU Council will be crucial for implementing these initiatives in the coming years.
