Kyiv Must Be the One to Decide on Ukraine's Elections, European Commission Says

Європейська комісія підкреслює, що лише Київ має право приймати рішення щодо проведення виборів в Україні.

The European Commission’s Stance on Elections in Ukraine

With Ukraine at war, the question of when and how to hold elections has become a topic of intense discussion. European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said that Ukraine itself has to make any decision about holding elections, in accordance with its own legal framework. The European Union is prepared to help Kyiv carry out an election campaign in line with democratic voting standards. Hipper stressed that it is for Ukraine to choose the right moment for elections, acting within its constitution.

Political Reactions and the Situation on the Ground

Mykhailo Fedorov, a former Ukrainian defense minister, also spoke in favor of holding elections. He argued that democracy should not be held hostage by Russia and underlined the need to bring members of the military and refugees who have the right to vote into the electoral process.

Ukraine’s presidential office, for its part, is not against elections but points to the security environment as the central obstacle, particularly the threat of Russian bombardment.

  • A source in the presidential office confirmed the severe challenges posed by the current security situation.
  • The question of whether elections will be held in Ukraine remains unresolved.

The European Commission’s statement signals support for Ukraine’s democratic course, but the actual conditions for an election are still in doubt because of the war. Ukrainian leaders face a hard trade-off between safeguarding democratic rights and protecting people from harm during hostilities. The outcome will matter not just for the election itself, but for political stability across Ukraine.
